Recipe: Probiotic Coconut Yogurt

Probiotic Coconut Yogurt Recipe
Coconut yogurt tastes so divine, yet is so expensive when bought in shops. Many brands also contain way more sugar than necessary, so here is a recipe on how to make probiotic coconut yogurt at home. By the way, probiotics are your gut's best friend - - your digestion gets supported, and even your immune system will benefit from having "good bacteria". Especially when you are sick or feeling like something's coming on, or when you are on antibiotics - make sure to have some probiotics as well, either in a yogurt like this one, fermented foods such as Kimchi or Sauerkraut, or as a supplement. Not a fan of coconut? Try this almond yogurt recipe! RECIPE: PROBIOTIC COCONUT YOGURT Ingredients: 1 young Thai coconut,...

Recipe: Raw Vegan Kimchi

Recipe for raw vegan Kimchi
Kimchi is kind of the Korean version of sauerkraut, and traditionally not vegan or raw - but this version is! Kimchi works well in salads or wraps, with a dip such as hummus and some crackers, or you can just eat it by the spoonful straight from the jar. In Korea, a family's kimchi recipe is a well hidden treasure - therefore there are hundreds of varieties, depending on the main vegetable ingredient, the season and the region. Another factor for the final product is also the fermentation process: temperature and length of fermentation will have an effect on how your Kimchi will taste like. Fermented foods such as this raw vegan kimchi are a great addition to your diet as they support your digestion with their...

Recipe: Crunchy Energy Bars

When checking the ingredients list of granola power bars, you often discover things in there that aren't really that healthy - heaps of sugar, flavour enhancers, more calories than a regular meal but way less nutrients. Raw vegan power bars on the other hand are mostly made with nuts and therefore contain a lot of fat. The usual suspects are almonds, cashews and walnuts - not a lot of variety really. This recipe on the other hand is made without sugar or nuts and incredibly versatile. You can pimp the basic recipe shown below to your heart's desire, be it with chopped dried fruit, sesame, chia, cacao nibs or spices and superfoods such as cinnamon, cacao, matcha or acai. The bars are awesome to bring...

Recipe: Apple Crumble with Vanilla Sauce

Coming from Vienna, Apple Strudel was omni present in my upbringing. This recipe is similar, yet way faster and easier to make than a classic strudel. All you need is a base (and you can even skip that if you wish - simply place the filling in bowls and cover with the crumble), the filling and the crumble. Plus there is need to bake or refrigerate for hours before diving in! The vanilla sauce is what apple strudel would be served with in Austria; sometimes you will also get it with whipped cream (recipe HERE) or ice cream - such as raspberry coconut ice cream! Ingredients for the base: 1/2 C almonds or cashew nuts 1/2 C buckinis or coconut flakes 2 TBSP honey or other liquid sweetener...

Beauty: Protect skin + hair from chlorine + salt

If you swim a lot, be it in the pool or ocean, you might have experienced dry skin and brittle hair due to the chlorine and salt in the water. There are several things you can do to avoid this, here is what works best for me - if you have any other techniques that work for you, let me know as well :) How to prevent dry hair and skin despite swimming in chlorine and salt water The first thing to know is that your skin and hair absorb everything that they come in contact with. You may have noticed that your hair feels thicker when it is wet. This is due to your hair absorbing water until it is saturated and the reason for the...

How to: Clean your blender in under a minute

If you are using your blender all the time, like me - for smoothies, ice cream, soup, spreads, nut milks, bliss balls, etc - this trick will save you tons of time. The trick with making blender cleaning easy is to at least rinse the container straight after using it. Like that, whatever you were blending will not get dry and sticky. So just give it a rinse if you are in a rush and do the rest later: Add 1 drop of dishwashing liquid and 1 cup of water to the container. Blend on high for half a minute. Rinse with fresh water. The container should be nice and shiny - if there is still some residue left, clean it with a dishwashing sponge...

Better than a New Year’s resolution

This time it's going to be different - is what we say every New Year's Eve, at the first of the month or beginning of the week. And then it all stays the same after all once again, maybe with a short flicker of change, but overall, same same and we are frustrated for not getting anywhere with our great plans and hopes and dreams, again. So here is what you could try instead of writing the 100th to-do list or resolution that'd probably look quite similar to the last one. Let me know how it goes :)

Recipe: Cardamom Vanilla Pudding with Chia

You may have seen chia seeds in the supermarket already - they are available in black and white, and some call them little dinosaur eggs because they kinda look like that. The truth couldn't be further though - chia seeds derive from the chia plant and are rich in omega 3 amino acids - perfect if you are eating vegetarian or vegan. Chia seeds are also incredibly helpful when preparing plant based cremes, custards or puddings ( -  they absorb liquids just like flax seeds and turn everything into jelly. This is also the reason why recipes with chia seeds will keep you full longer, and this is why I love chia puddings and everything chia!   This cardamom vanilla pudding tastes sensational, but you can...

Float Tank: total relaxation for body + mind

I love being in water, especially if it is warm and clear and I can float in it. And I love being relaxed - well, who doesn't, right? (Actually, some people are addicted to drama, but that's a different story). So when I discovered flotation tanks, also known as sensory deprivation tanks, I was super intrigued and booked myself in straight away. What is a flotation tank? Flotation tanks are containers filled with warm, very salty water. So salty actually, that the water is dense enough for you to  ... you guessed it, float! To filter out any noise, the containers close - they are super easy to open again, and the inside is also equipped with some light source that you can control from the...

HiiT is the Shi.. – Why I love interval training!

My favorite exercise when I have little time is HiiT - High Intensity Interval Training.  Actually, it is my favorite way of exercise of all time. I have even done a session at waiting for boarding at an airport once!     WHY I LOVE HIIT WORKOUTS No gear: You can do it without any equipment, all you need is an interval timer which you can download onto your smart phone. Oh and water. If done right, you will be a puddle afterwards :) No time: The training is over and done with in 15-20 minutes, at that includes stretching afterwards! Soak + Relax: Detox-Bath

If you are amongst the lucky ones who can call a bath tub their own, then you hopefully enjoy soaking in it every now and then. Super relaxing, warming, and lets you sleep like a log afterwards.  Instead of bubble baths though, I prefer to use my own detox bath blend, with sea salt and bicarb soda. Both detox and neutralize your body, and the warmth relaxes your muscles. A detox bath can also soothe itchy skin, help clean and renew your skin, improve its' appearance and soften it (more details below the recipe).  Sometimes I also add essential oils. All in all a whole bunch of positive effects in addition to the feel good factor, and better value for money than store-bought bath salts as...

Beauty: Moisturizing mask for all skin types

Whether your skin is dehydrated from being in a cold climate, or too much time in an air-conditioned environment (offices, buses, planes, etc), or your simply want to pamper yourself with a little DIY home spa mask, avocado is your go-to ingredient. Avocados are a fantastic yet so simple way to revitalizing, nourishing and hydrating your skin. By rehydrating your skin, you also plump any fine lines that may be forming - next to sun damage and smoking, dehydration is one of the major causes for prematurely aged skin. Plus, you skip all the chemical ingredients and synthetics that store-bought beauty products usually contain. This makes your treatment less irritating for your skin, and friendlier for both your wallet and the environment. And the best part: any leftover...

Recipe: Chocolate Kale Chips

This recipe is my contribution to Movember - say what? Movember (www.movember.com) is all about mens health in terms of prostate and testicle cancer - and kale is an excellent food to boost your health, reduce chances of disease and also nourish you back to health faster if necessary: Kale contains over 45 antioxidants, the phytochemicals lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin A, C and K, beta-carotene, calcium, folate, iron, magnesium and potassium - and some of that in far larger quantities than you’ll find in most other veggies. Kale delivers 4 times more magnesium and calcium than Brussels sprouts; more Vitamin C than carrots or spinach, and it contains more folate than broccoli (source: McCance and Widdowson’s ‘The Composition of Foods). Kale is also full of fiber,...

Food for thought: “What if … ?” by Bex Tyrer

As the sunsets on an island in Bahia so it can rise in Bali...What if I could let it all just be? What if I was already “good” enough? What if I had no regrets? What if I allowed the precious memories of the past to simply provide power for the present? What if I stopped planning the future? What if I were to trust fully in the divinity of all? What if I Didn’t. Worry. About. Anything. ? What if I really did make the most of every “opportunity”? What if I could give without giving myself away? What if I could receive without feelings of inadequacy? What if I could forgive myself? What if I let go of all judgments and bowed in...

Listen to your heart – here is why

What do you listen to more - your heart or your thoughts? are you a super rational person, or do you let yourself be guided by your intuition? Your heart beats 108.000 times a day - one hundred and eight thousand! With an average of 70 beats per minute, times 60 times 24 it really adds up to this incredible number, daily. Then studies and research discovered, that statements like "having a broken heart" or "my heart is overflowing with joy" have more to it than initially thought. 40.000 afferent neurones are located in your heart - the so-called...

All Natural Soothing, Bacteria Killing, Pimple Zapping, Exfoliating Miracle Mask

In the past, I used honey for my face if I got a pimple here or there. It was truly an exceptional solution and never failed me. Obviously since going vegan, I am not eating or using honey. And on top of that, my skin is worse than it has been in MANY years. (I’m pregnant, and thankfully other than my skin I am in TIP TOP health and still full of energy!) As a health educator, I simply can’t allow blotchy skin. I like to look my best, naturally, so that no one can possibly have any doubts about what I am sharing with them regarding health. But I have been unable to find anything on the market to help (externally). Of course I...

Can you eat raw quince ?

What is a quince?  This bright yellow fruit (Cydonia oblonga) belongs to the same family as apples and pears. It has its origins in South-West Asia, Turkey and Iran but grows on trees all over the world these days. Quince in tropical countries and Asia is soft and juicy and can easily be eaten raw just like apples. In colder climates, such as Europe and North America, quince has a tougher rind and astringent flesh which does not make it toxic but too acidic and bitter to be enjoyed in its raw version. Quince is laden with vitamin A and antioxidant vitamin C which boosts immunity, reduces inflammatory conditions and viral episodes. The fruit is also a great source of copper, potassium, iron and magnesium as well as B...

But fact aside that they are totally overpriced, most of these bars are just pretend-healthy and, most importantly, do not really taste great.  What to do? Make your own! It is inexpensive, surprisingly easy, you can make a large batch of several flavours at once - and create the bar of your dreams, completely personalised so...

How To Make a Green Tea MATCHA Ice Cream Shake

Chances are, green tea is nothing new to you. But have you tried the Matcha variety? It is green tea in powder form and contains caffeine like all green teas. It also contains amino acids - which bind the caffeine and help your body digesting it. Matcha is very rich in anti-oxidants and contains lots of nutrients such as the already mentioned amino acids = proteins, chlorophyll, iron, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin B1, B2, B3, vitamin E and vitamin K. Matcha is not truly raw; the young leaves are steamed dry in the process which is likely to heat them too much to keep the raw quality. As it is mainly used for taste and, despite its bright green colour, completely natural, this shouldn't be too much...

Recipe: Key Lime Pie – made in Utila, Honduras!

Yum Recently, I was on the beautiful Honduran island of Utila, in the middle of the Caribbean. I was there to teach and train freediving – hondo means deep in Spanish so Utila is a great place to be, whether for scuba or freediving. And when I think about the Caribbean, I think tropical, lush fruit in abundance – which is true, but only for what’s in season. Right now, there are lots of avocados and limes, juicy and ripe, meaning they are actually quite yellow and not green (and unripe) like most of us know them from the store. So what to do with these ingredients other than guacamole or a green smoothie?  KEY LIME PIE! for 1 pie Ingredients: 1.5 C roughly chopped nuts…

Recipe: Sweet Potato Juice

Yum Sweet potatoes are originally from Central America – and in Peru, archaeologists discovered some from a time before the Incas. In the 1500s, when Shakespeare was around, they were regarded as an aphrodisiac and today they are so popular that the US state North Carolina made them their official vegetable in 1995. Sweet potatoes contain more beta-carotene than any other vegetable, even more than the carrot, and are also rich in vitamin A. If you have already tried them, you might be wondering just like me, why the potato, with so little flavour that one might even call it bland and boring, is still used so much – at least in many European countries. In the U.S., Canada and New Zealand for example, there…

How to: make natural bug spray and mosquito repellant & what helps with itchy insect bites

YIPPIIIIIIEH!!! Winter is gone - at least according to the calendar - Spring is here! Longer days, more sunshine, temperatures rising, flowers blooming and.. insects buzzing! Sure, I will always let bees do their job - but mosquitos (family: culicidae) and bugs are likely to turn me into a serial killer! My blood must be the sweetest nectar for these little creatures - if you are with me, chances you get bitten go down to zero - while there is a blood fest happening over on my skin. Therefore, the research for natural insect repellants and mosquito sprays is 100% in my own interest :) The first part is about bugs in general, the second part goes a bit into detail about one special friend. NATURAL...

Movie: Food Inc. Documentary

Filmmaker Robert Kenner shows in his award-winning documentary Food, Inc. what's really going on in the US food industry. The highly mechanized underbelly which the FDA and USDA (the US government's regulatory agencies) consent to keep hidden from the American consumer is being exposed. The food supply in the United States these days is controlled by only a handful of corporations. Profit often counts for more than consumer health, farmers' livelihoods, workers' safety and our whole environment. You will discover surprising—and often shocking truths. Chicken have bigger breasts, pork chops come in perfectly unison shape, seeds such as soybeans are herbicide resistant, tomatoes don't go bad anymore - and at the same time, Westerners, especially children, are riddled with obesity, and adults face an an epidemic of...

8 Life hacks for an eco friendly lifestyle

For these tricks you do not need to be a crusty old-school hippie - give them a go! You most likely have all ingredients at home already :)   1. Use lemon as chemical-free deodorant. The citric acid kills odor-causing bacteria. Do not use on freshly shaved skin. It'll burn. Better make your own in that case. 2. Make non-toxic insecticide. Mix vegetable oil, (eco) dish soap such as Dr. Bronner, and water. Shake and spray your plants. 3. Say goodbye to Drano! Unclog drains by pouring in baking soda, vinegar and hot water. 4. Disinfect cuts with raw honey. It has antiseptic and antibiotic properties, creates a breathable barrier like skin, and helps wounds heal faster. 5. Replace cheese and butter with nutritional yeast. It's packed...

Recipe: the uber most delicious Choc Chip Cookies ever!

Yum Ok this recipe is seriously the best chocolate chip cookie recipe I have ever had. Well, at least if you love a lightly crunchy outside and a slightly sticky, gooey, moist inside plus really good, dark chocolate chips! The recipe is best if dehydrated but you can also alter it if you do not have a dehydrator or oven with super low temperature. The good part about the dehydration here is that unlike other recipes that require dehydration, this one is done in 3 hours (nothing “over night”) So what I did was to put half the batter into the dehydrator, and the play with the rest, modifying it into a 2nd, non-dehydrator recipe – perfect! Here’s how you make these healthy* puppies: *…

Is it true that green smoothies are unhealthy and even poisonous?

Whether you have never tried green smoothies or whether you have been enjoying green smoothies for a while already, you may have stumbled across this statement as well: Green smoothies are dangerous! Green smoothies are unhealthy – green smoothies are poisonous! Now the big question is of course – is that true? Luckily, no. It is not true. Green smoothies are actually great for you and can transform your health.  But how did anyone come up with the idea that green smoothies could be bad for you? Oxalic Acid! Leafy greens contain oxalic acid, especially spinach, beetroot and chard. Since oxalic acid has been linked to kidney stones, it would be easy to say that therefore green smoothies provoke kidney stones. But oxalic acid can also…

Why juice instead of blending?

When it comes to the question of juicing vs blending, there are two parties – some are strictly for fresh juices and call smoothies fads, others love nothing more than a creamy smoothie and think little of juicing.
For many, the only difference between smoothies and juices is that a smoothie is creamy and a juice is a thin liquid, but whether there are any advantages or disadvantages in juices or smoothies often seems to be unclear.

Which blender is better: Breville, Tribest, Kitchenaid or Vitamix?

Often enough the question arises, which blender should I get, there are so many brands! Does it have to be that expensive or will a cheap one do? What is actually important when purchasing a kitchen blender? And where can I buy a good blender in Germany, where can I get a Vitamix in Austria, where can I buy a Vitamix internationally?

Bananas – not just for 801010 lovers. 24 facts about bananas

24 fakten ueber bananen die du noch nicht kanntest

Bananas became REALLY popular when followers of Douglas Graham’s 801010 Diet advertised themselves to be eating 30 bananas a day, and still have flat bellies! But aside that, bananas are so incredibly versatile – I certainly did not know half of the points made here! Be amazed too: 1. Hair treatment: 2-3 ripe bananas (1 for short, 3 for really long hair). Teeth whitener: Considering bleaching to get pearly whites? Rub banana peel on your teeth instead. Do this for about two minutes twice a day when brushing your teeth and you’ll skip the chemical treatment any time….

Movie: Our daily bread

A sneak peak into the world of industrial food production and high-tech agriculture: To the rhythm of conveyor belts and immense machines, the film eyes locations of food production in Europe: Nikolaus Geyrhalter shows monumental spaces, surreal landscapes and bizarre sounds - a cool, industrial environment which leaves little room for individuality. People, animals, plants and machines meet the function ascribed to them by the logistics of this system which underpins the standard of living of our society. This movie isn't supposed to be an anti-meat propaganda film that's meant to turn everyone vegan. This is meant to be a hyper objective look at the way our species cultivates food. The fact that there is no commentary leaves the viewer to draw their own conclusions of morality...

Where to buy a spiralizer

When it comes to spiral slicers, I have only tried the ones I use in the videos – “Joyce Chen” and “Lurch”. If you have the opportunity, visit one of the (raw) food fairs, and see if it might be offered there for less. Otherwise you can also find spiral slicers on Ebay, just ask the seller if they ship the unit to you for less postage if you do not live in the U.S. . Or get one from Amazon.com; the shipping fees will most likely be high if you do not live in the U.S., but if you have friends there, you can have the order send to them and let them send it to you: If you find the Joyce Chen or similar equipment…

Can you eat raw aubergines or raw potatoes?

Blueberries

Blueberries are rich in vitamin C which can help the formation of collagen and maintaining healthy capillaries and also promotes iron absorption. They are high in fibre which helps digestion, control of cholesterol and also keeps the heart healthy. In addition, they are a great source of manganese which is important for bone development and the conversion of proteins, carbs and fats into energy. And lastly, blueberries are leading when it comes to antioxidant activity. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals (which are linked to development of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s). The major contributors to antioxidant activity in blueberries are polyphenols, specifically anthocyanins in the skin and meat which give the berries their beautiful blue colour.

Avocados contain hard, green flesh around a single stone.   Avocados will ripen when left at room temperature and are ready to eat when they yield slightly to gentle pressure. Avocados can be eaten alone, used in salads or as a spread, pureed for smoothies and even ice cream. They can help with dysentery, high blood pressure and abdominal pains. Rich in vitamins B3, C, E, K, Potassium (60% more than bananas), and mono-unsaturated fats. Just be aware that 2 Avocados provide 110% of…

Agave

Agave is a very sweet syrup made from the leaves of a cactus – the agave plant which is mostly known for being used to produce tequila. The advantage of agave is that it is rather low on the glycaemic index and therefore also suitable for diabetics. Its fructose on the other hand is high and it has been controversial whether agave syrup is actually ever raw. Moreover is it, as opposed to e.g. honey or maple syrup, fairly neutral in its taste which makes it a great substitute for standard industrial sugar. Agave is rich in inulin which is a polysaccharide, consisting of an average of 9 parts fructose and one part glucose.
